Solar Imaging Lab - March 20/21, 2014

The Solar Imaging Lab

We use two different telescopes:
    1. The Coronado Solarmax II 60 - Has a red filter that is sensitive to light from Hydrogen atoms on the solar surface, the Chromosphere. This scope is very good at revealing the detailed features of convection cells, filaments plages on the Sun's surface. Information on understanding the Hydrogen Alpha solar pictures can be found at spacew.com
    2. The Nexstar 8" Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope - Views the Photosphere of the Sun in visible light, good at located sunspsots, but not much more detail.

LAB ASSIGNMENT

0. Download your two solar images from the files below.

(Note that if you are not totally happy with your Hydrogen alpha pictures, you can use of of the ones labeled aa-Sunspots.jpg and H-alpha-1/2.jpg or
H-alpha-closeup-1/2.jpg instead).

1. Work on the Sunspot image.
Open up Powerpoint, put your sunspot image on a blank powerpoint slide (in landscape mode). Make sure the sun image fills the entire slide. Your goal is to illustrate how big the sunspots and the sun are by drawing in solid circles (placed near to a sunspot) that represent the sizes of (a) the Earth and (b) Jupiter. Note that
the diameter of the Sun is 1.39x106 km, the Diameter of the Earth is 1.27x104 km, and the diameter of Jupiter is 1.39x105 km.

2. Work on the Hydrogen-alpha image.
Insert your Hydrogen-alpha solar image on a second Powerpoint slide. To increase the contrast of your images, and to add color, right click on your image, select Format Picture, and try using the settings below. Label any observed features such as sunspots, prominences, filaments ... Estimate the sizes in km's of any prominences seen.

3. Open a third slide in Powerpoint and write a paragraph explaining the differences between the two telescopes. What kinds of light are each one sensitive to? What region of the Sun does each observe, why are sunspots or filaments darker than surrounding regions. Explain.

4. Label both of your image slides with your name, date, image file names email the Powerpoint file to me.
